Iraqi numismatics begins with Ottoman Mesopotamian issues and moves through the British mandate, the Hashemite Kingdom (1921–1958), and the republic. The Kingdom era produced portrait coins of Kings Faisal I, Ghazi, and Faisal II — among the most sought-after Arab royal portraits. The republican period issued coins commemorating landmarks from the Hammurabi statue to the Ishtar Gate, while Ba'athist issues reflected the country's turbulent political history through 2004.
Hashemite Kingdom portrait coins are the prestige pieces — Faisal I silver dinars are key rarities. Republican-era copper-nickel issues (1959–1970s) are affordable and historically rich. Ba'athist commemoratives in silver (Babylon series, Gulf War-era) are controversial but collectible. British mandate fils (1931–1933) complete the pre-Kingdom picture.
