Algerian coinage spans three distinct periods: Ottoman Regency issues (1515–1830) from the Algiers mint, French colonial francs and centimes (1830–1962), and the modern republic's dinar series (1964–present). Ottoman Algiers produced distinctive copper mangirs and silver budju — coins that circulated across the Mediterranean. The French colonial era issued some of the most beautifully designed coins in North Africa. Independent Algeria's coins celebrate Berber heritage, revolutionary heroes, and natural resources.

Ottoman Regency budju (silver) and mangir (copper) are specialist pieces with Mediterranean-wide historical significance. French colonial centimes (1919–1952) are inexpensive and form a beautiful complete set. The early republic dinar series (1964–1972) in nickel is historically pivotal and undervalued. Look for the rare Essai (trial strike) pieces from the French and early republic periods.
