Sudanese coinage history encompasses the Mahdist State (1885–1898), Anglo-Egyptian Condominium issues, and the modern republic's pound and dinar series. The Mahdist period produced the most historically fascinating Sudanese coins — struck in Omdurman during the siege of Khartoum, they bear simple Arabic legends reflecting the Mahdi's Islamic state. Post-independence Sudan issued coins celebrating African unity and development. The Nimeiry era (1969–1985) produced an extensive commemorative series, some in gold.

Mahdist piastres (1885–1898) are the historical crown jewels — difficult to find in good condition but deeply significant. Condominium-era milliemes (1956 independence series) are affordable. Nimeiry commemoratives in silver and cupro-nickel (1970s–80s) represent the golden age of Sudanese commemoratives. The scarce Darfur and provincial issues from the late Ottoman period are specialist territories.
