الكويت

Kuwait began issuing its own currency in 1961 with independence from Britain. Prior to this, Indian rupees and Gulf rupees circulated in the sheikhdom. Kuwaiti coins under five amirs — Abdullah Al-Salem, Sabah Al-Salem, Jaber Al-Ahmad, Sabah Al-Ahmad, and Nawaf Al-Ahmad — feature the distinctive dhow sailing ship. Kuwait was the first Gulf state to issue a gold dinar commemorative series, setting a precedent for the region's numismatic development.

💡Collecting tips

The complete five-reign circulation set (1961–present) in fils is the foundation Kuwaiti collection. First-year issues under Abdullah Al-Salem (1961) are the key dates. Gold dinar proof sets (1970s–80s) are prestige pieces — the archaeological and heritage series are particularly sought. Iraqi occupation-era pieces (1990–1991) are a controversial but historically significant subcategory.
